Thank you very much for your inquiry regarding abdominoplasty surgery, also known as a “tummytuck”. This procedure can produce amazing rejuvenation to your belly, especially if you're a woman after child-birth or after significant weight loss. The options for body contouring of the abdomen and hip area include: 1. body liposcultping (removing fatty tissue only) 2. abdominoplasty (removing both fatty tissue & excess skin, and re
pairing any division of your abdominal muscle), and 3. Noninvasive, non-surgical procedures using either ultrasound or radiofrequency to tighten skin, reduce fat with overall circumferential narrowing and cellulite treatment.
I have considerable experience in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery with completion of residency and fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center. Dr Troell is known as an expert by his peers and has been a national trainer for three techniques in body contouring including VASER ultrasound assisted and high definition liposuction, SlimLipo laser- assisted liposuction and the Body-Jet water-jet assisted liposuction techniques. He has presented over 16 physician training workshops in the last several years on body contouring and multiple national and international presentations on high-definition liposuction, stem cells in medical and aesthetic procedures, fat transfer to the face and body as well as noninvasive body contouring. He recently completed two chapters in a medical textbook entitled Stem Cells in Aesthetic Procedures: Art, Science & Surgical Techniques.
If the amount of excess skin is predicted not to tighten satisfactory from VASER liposuction alone, usually performed under oral and mild IV sedation, then excision of fatty tissue and skin will be recommended. Abdominoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia with a low abdominal incision with suturing of the abdominal muscle (rectus muscle).
Avelar lipo-abdominoplasty uses liposuction to thin the abdominal tissue and then excise excess skin. Since it combines these two techniques, it is referred to as a “combi-tuck”. It is more comfortable to perform the abdominoplasty under general anesthesia. Dr Troell performs ultrasound liposuction on most patients simultaneously with abdominoplasty for optimal results and minimal side effects. Most surgeons restrict their abdominoplasty with no liposuction or ultrasound for less than optimal results.
The recovery with the Avelar lipo-abdominoplasty is longer than liposuction with three to seven days requiring narcotic medication, however, much shorter than traditional abdominoplasty. With the Avelar tummy tuck one can expect mild bruising and swelling with patients returning to work within five to ten days. The step that results in more discomfort is repairing the separated abdominal muscle.
