Is Skin Testing Mandatory Before Bellafill Injection in Facial Rejuvenation?

Bellafill is an injectable filler that is available in the United States for rejuvenating the skin of the face

Although there are many different types of injectable fillers used for this cosmetic purpose, Bellafill is the only one that is permanent. It has been proven to carry only rare allergic responses. Skin testing has shown that individuals who are allergic to red meat and local anesthesia are allergic to it.

What is the Purpose of Bellafill in Aesthetics?

Bellafill® is FDA approved

The key to rejuvenating the face, giving it a more youthful appearance and eliminating wrinkles is to rely on dermal fillers. These are the second most minimally invasive aesthetic options available throughout the United States. The majority of these fillers offer temporary solutions, but Bellafill is the only long term option.

Is a Skin Test Required Prior to Bellafill Facial Injections?

Health Canada offers skin testing to ensure that patients will have no allergy to Bellafill.

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration states to manufacturers that they must inform doctors that a skin test should be done on any patient who is planning on getting Bellafill dermal filler injections within 28 days before the procedure. This necessity has been in place because of submission information in 2007. Since then, data from North America and Europe has revealed that an instance of an allergic reaction is rare and that skin testing is unlikely to show that a person would be allergic to Bellafill.

Dr. Troell recently finished a review of the medical literature related to Bellafill and went over the history of 1,513 patients who were injected with the dermal filler, which came to a total of 2,875 syringes from 2009 to 2016. In patients who denied a red meat allergy or allergy to lidocaine, there were no notable allergic reactions to Bellafill injections. This information will soon be submitted to the Dermatologic Surgery medical journal. The data was presented at the 2016 annual meeting at the Aesthetic Show.
